HELPING TYPHOON XANGSANE VICTIMS

Dear friends,

Typhoon Xangsane slammed into the central provinces of Vietnam on Sunday 1 October, packing strong winds and rains that cut power and caused widespread devastation and disruption. Approximately 1.3 million people are reported to be affected.

As of October 10, 2006, the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control reported 69 people dead, 525 injured, and 2 still missing. Almost 20,000 homes were destroyed, along with 274,000 other homes collapsed, with no roof or inundated. Tens of thousands of acres of crops were flooded. The hardest hit areas were the provinces of Quang Nam-Da Nang, Thua Thien-Hue, and Quang Ngai. Typhoon Xangsane is said to have the same destructive power as Hurricane Katrina that struck Louisiana, USA in 2005.

Within an hour or so, the storm destroyed the hard-earned savings of a lifetime in areas that were already plagued with poverty. People watched in tears as their roof got ripped apart and their walls came crumbling down. The storm had taken away the however shabby houses that kept people warm, and destroyed the crops and means that gave them food, and hope.

The poor just got poorer. Innocent children, ailing elderly and struggling families there need our help, our thoughts and prayers. Our donations, no matter how small, give them the hope, the means and the strength to get back on their feet.

ICAN has sent $2,000 emergency relief to help buy books, school supplies and clothes for the children.
With your help, we will continue to help storm victims with their short-term needs as well as their efforts to rebuild their lives. Activities could include rebuilding schools, houses, or supporting mobile clinic efforts to reach victims in outlying areas. We will keep you posted. Please let us know if you know of other needs.

The Vietnamese community has shown great compassion toward victims of tsunami and Katrina. Victims of Typhoon Xengsane needs our help even more, as they live in areas already plagued with poverty.
Please join us in lending a helping hand.

100% of all donations will be sent to Vietnam to help these victims. Please make check payable to ICAN , write in the Memo line: Typhoon#6 victims, and send it to: ICAN , 1425 Clayton Rd, San Jose, CA 95127 .(All donations to ICAN are tax-deductible)

Our heartfelt gratitude for your generosity and compassion.

Sincerely yours,

ICAN Team
